Having recently endured the mildly entertaining Australia with Nicole Kidman (would someone please give this woman a decent script!), I thought it best to revisit a true classic of the Grand Epic genre, and there is no better example than Out of Africa. Based on the works and life of Karen Blixen (who wrote under the pen name Isak Dinesen), Out of Africa is everything a great drama should be: romantic, exotic, tragic, elegant, breathtakingly beautiful, and filled with larger-than-life characters who inspire us to dream of great adventures in far off historical settings. Streep’s performance followed her work in Sophie’s Choice and probably sealed her reputation as the greatest living actress of our time. She plays Blixen as an independent and hard working modern woman who has grown tired of convention, war, and society. Africa is to be her escape, but she soon finds that there is no perfect life and while there, she has to battle the old demons brought by her fellow European colonists. She does, however, find love, and not just any love, but the kind of love one hopes to find – ethereal, transformational, and desperately passionate. Loves like this are hard to find, but they are even harder to keep, and Karen must learn to accept tragedy as the often unwelcomed partner of romance. Redford play Denys, Karen’s one true love, and the man who simply refuses to live by anyone’s rules but his own. If there is a glitch in the film, it is in the performance of Redford, who (for me) never seems completely comfortable with his character. It’s a minor complaint, and I am in the minority perhaps, and ultimately, it doesn’t affect the film’s stunning beauty, or any of the fine performances from the supporting cast. Out of Africa is great storytelling, and is a film that should be experienced over and over again.
