This film was made before Mickey’s many plastic surgeries to repair the aftermath of his boxing career. Initially I found this film difficult to follow secondary to the editing. Mickey Rourke tries to put on a quasi English accident which is distracting at first. However, Mickey Rourkes performance is so powerful that I not only do not care, but I embrace it. He captures a raw quality about St. Fancis. He portrays a man who doesn’t quite understand what his calling is or why he is called but falls in love with God and the poor. Despite the mystery, he throws his entire body, literally into trying to serve and understand. But his body sadly, and at the same time joyfully falls apart.
