The Proposal
December 8th, 2009
When she learns that she’s in danger of losing her visa status and being deported back to her native Canada, overbearing book editor Margaret Tate (Sandra Bullock) forces her put-upon assistant, Andrew Paxton (Ryan Reynolds), to marry her. Directed by Anne Fletcher (27 Dresses), this romantic comedy also stars Craig T. Nelson and Mary Steenburgen as Andrew’s parents, Joe and Grace, and Betty White as the outspoken Grandma Annie.
I really like Sandra Bullock but she has made a lot of so so movies which do not ring any bells for me. THE PROPOSAL is an enjoyable ROMANTIC COMEDY. Anne Fletcher, who directed 27 Dresses, a bonified CHICK FLICK, teamed up with the producer of EAGLE EYE (Pete Chiarelli), in his screenwriting job, to bring us a situational funny COMEDY that I laughed my way through along with a full audience. Since it was the second week for this film I thought I could get there a little later and still get a good seat, however, I ended up having to sit on THE FIRST ROW and It was STILL a LAUGH OUT LOUD movie!! I LOVED the teaming and comedic timing of Ryan Reynolds (Definitely, Maybe) and Sandra Bullock. Bullock is the Executive Editor In Chief of a book publishing company who EVERYONE in the company hates, including her executive assistant, Andrew, who is played by Reynolds. When Margaret (Bullock) learns she is ready to be deported to Canada and will lose her job she thinks fast and blackmails her assistant into agreeing to marry her. When a government official believes they are pulling a fast one Margaret ups the ante and takes a trip home with Andrew to Alaska to announce their engagement. Of course this trip is not exactly what either of them expected and that is where the comedy really shines. Betty White as gramma is terrific and really kind of reprises the role she made popular on The Golden Girls. Thought it ironic that Reynolds is really Canadian and Bullock is an American from Virginia. I also LOVED the fantastic filming from Alaska. It really made me want to get on a plane or take a cruise to the beautiful wilderness state. This is a movie that will give you a nice relief from the summer heat for a couple of hours and you will even have fun while cooling off in the theater. What more could you ask from a summer movie?
