Terminator Salvation

December 6th, 2009

All grown up in post-apocalyptic 2018, John Connor (Christian Bale) must lead the resistance of humans against the increasingly dominating militaristic robots in this fourth installment of the popular action-packed Terminator series. But when Marcus Wright (Sam Worthington) appears, his existence confuses the mission as Connor tries to determine whether Wright has come from the future or the past — and whether he’s friend or foe.

As yet another entry in the long list of summer blockbusters, this is a great movie, yet I doubt it will do more than merely whet the long pent-up appetites of the hardcore fans. In short, I was ready for a satisfying resolution, but got the promise of a sequel instead. I would suggest going back and re-watching the first three movies because little is provided in this newest installment in the way of exposition. Great FX and an interesting new character, Marcus Wright, played by Sam Worthington, seem to be the only improvements on an already great story. Sam Worthington looks a little bit like Mark Wahlberg, and his acting chops lend a much-needed depth to the otherwise predictable story. I am also a big fan of Anton Yelchin, who has a bit part in the new Star Trek movie as well, and I predict he will soon be a household name. Here, he plays Kyle Reese. More of a back-story regarding those two characters would have added a lot to the movie in my opinion. Yes, Anton’s character Kyle is resurrected from the first movie, but that was a long time ago. I wanted to know more about him as a teenager, and about Marcus’ previous life as well. However, as is the ever-increasing trend with action movies, much of the story is sacrificed to never-ending action sequences unfolding at break-neck speed and only the occasional allusion to what this movie could have been. Nonetheless, I was thoroughly entertained, and I enjoyed the way the used the bleak, dark cinematography and modern rock soundtrack to give Terminator a modern makeover, cynicism and awesome robots intact.
