Watchmen

Zack Snyder directs this adaptation of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’s graphic novel set in a parallel Earth in 1985, where superheroes are prohibited from using their powers despite the threat of nuclear war. When one of their number is murdered, however, the outlaw heroes — including Dr. Manhattan (Billy Crudup), Silk Spectre (Carla Gugino), Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley) and Nite Owl (Patrick Wilson) — unite to defend themselves.
“Watchmen” is a visual feast from director Zack Snyder starring Billy Crudup, Patrick Wilson, Carla Gugino and Malin Akerman. Make no mistake about it, the superheros in this tale are killers and not to be messed with. With the threat of nuclear war looming between Russia and the United States, President Nixon decrees that superhero activity is to be completely outlawed and shutdown. However, when one of their own known as The Comedian is hunted down and killed by an unknown assassin, the remaining heros reunite in an effort to both discover who the killer is and to stop the annihilation of mankind through the impending nuclear devastation. This is an extraordinary film with some excellent state-of-the-art special effects, CG work and visuals. It is impelling and engrossing with very strong characters that are explained and developed very well. The main plot never suffers from these side stories, in fact it is enhanced by knowing how each of these characters have come to be where they are today and the overall effect they will have on our planet’s outcome. This is a deep and well wrought tale that demands to be watched. I highly recommend “Watchmen” at 4 1/2 stars and am looking forward to experiencing it again.
