Twilight

October 7th, 2009

When Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) moves to a small town in the Pacific Northwest to live with her father, she starts school and meets the reclusive Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson), a mysterious classmate who reveals himself to be a 108-year-old vampire. Despite Edward’s repeated cautions, Bella can’t help but fall in love with him, a fatal move that endangers her own life when a coven of bloodsuckers try to challenge the Cullen clan.

Reviews are mixed and opinions split on Twilight. There are several reasons for this. First the book is popular. Book fans either love it enough to accept the movie or hate that its not as good as the book. Vampire film genre fans are split on this as well because it does not fit the typical fast pace dark Gothic even violent or sexy themes that usually are expected in a vampire film. This is a Romeo & Juliet romance! It is not as good as the book (how could it be) and it is different from what vampire fans expect (subdued and paced methodically) and so the market for people who like this is not the same as the people the previews and marketing suggested. This is a romantic teen drama with a bit of after school special tone It approaches the vampire lore from a perspective much closer to the of the real vampire movement than the typical Dracula fantasy we all have of vampires. My wife said it felt like a woman writer and director it was tender. Of course that is true (she deduced it with out knowing). So even if you are not a teenage girl in love with the book there may be something to enjoy. I am a 31 year old male but one who does watch teen drama, blame it on the cousins ;-) . Edward is a morose and tortured soul who feels his life has little or no purpose. Bella is new to town and to school. In the film you need to accept that passion they feel is deep. Giving it a little faith and grace was all it took to find this particularly enjoyable. Series aside it is certainly unique enough as a film to warrant a peek from many viewers. Hope this is Helpful!
