The Way We Were

October 7th, 2009

Sociopolitical opposites attract in director Sydney Pollack’s wistful, Oscar-winning tearjerker about an outspoken political crusader named Katie Morosky (Barbra Streisand) who finds herself drawn to glib golden boy Hubbell Gardner (Robert Redford). Despite their differences, the improbable couple eventually ties the knot, but a move to Tinseltown and the firestorm surrounding the 1950s blacklist unravel the marriage.

One of Sydney Pollack’s most sentimental love stories sure to leave you with tears. Katie is one of Streisand’s best roles. She is a woman who has had to work hard for everything and puts 110% effort into everything she touches. She’s a born crusader even when there is not a cause she will find one. Her one major flaw is her almost desperate love for dreamy Hubbel Gardner, played by the biggest heart throb of the 70′s, Robert Redford. Just to see him in those Navy whites is a vision for the eyes. Hubbel is the polar opposite of Katie. He first starts out in college as the good-looking popular fraternity man who runs with the priviledged crowd. Hubbel doesnt like to take life too seriously because everything has always come easy for him. He eventually becmes a writer and we know that this story is not going to end happily ever after. We like this movie in part because we’ve all experienced some heart break of our own and can relate. The ending kind of reminds me of another tear jerker, “Splendor in the Grass”. They both go on with their lives but you know they will always love one another deep in their hearts. The greatest Chick Flick from the 70′s with Oscars for best song, “Memories”, and the best musical score. Redford and Streisand couldnt be better.
