Quantum Of Solace
October 18th, 2009
Picking up an hour after the events of 2006′s Casino Royale, this James Bond adventure finds 007 (Daniel Craig) tracking a traitor who’s infiltrated Britain’s MI6. The trail leads to Dominic Greene (Mathieu Amalric), the charismatic head of a world environmental agency. But behind this seemingly legitimate facade, Greene runs Quantum, a powerful terrorist organization whose plot to overthrow a Bolivian dictator masks an even more sinister scheme.
I expected Quantum of Solace to be film worthy of the James Bond franchise yet a lesser film than the very impressive Casino Royale. I was right but barely. The freshman entry of Daniel Craig as 007 was beyond expectation on every level. Duplicating that feat seemed implausible. As it turns out, it was. Yet, in the James Bond tradition, Quantum of Solace is a great ride from beginning to end. I suspect some Bond fans may not like it as much because complexity isn¿t constantly pasted over by winks and flippant remarks. These interlinking story arcs are anchored to a foundation that gives cause for the more serious character development offered to Craig. It also increases the dramatic intensity of the series to a level not possible with the previous actors. It’s not that Ian Flemming’s sense of irony and humor is lost on the new bond, but this story is built upon the death of Vesper Lynd (Eva Green, Casino Royale) and the ascetical fundamentals to which Bond has to adhere lest he rage into a revenge driven rampage. This Bond is conflicted. Nuanced. His job is not simply a ticket facilitating entry into a world as a toy box. Daniel Craig makes you feel the war raging within him. His demons are barely constrained while his control verges on evaporation every moment. Quantum of Solace is part two of the Casino Royale launch of this new variation on the Bond franchise. I didn’t expect part two to be the equal to an original. We arrive comfortable. We know what to expect. But no matter what is expected from the Bond franchise, in my opinion, Quantum of Solace is a hard driving action film blended with an extraordinary cinematic exercise.
