I Love You, Man
October 3rd, 2009
In this bromance, the cinematic equivalent of a rom-com buddy flick, Paul Rudd plays a recently engaged guy who’s got the bride-to-be of his dreams but lacks an all-important significant other when it comes to their pending nuptials: a best man. On a determined hunt for a stranger who will stand up for him, he eventually meets a candidate (Jason Segel) with wedding-party potential. Jaime Pressly, Rashida Jones and Jon Favreau co-star.
This was a lot of fun. I am really turning into a fan of Jason Segel (Forgetting Sarah Marshall), as well as Paul Rudd (Role Models and about every other comedy from the past several years). Both are perfectly cast in their roles: Rudd as a bumbling, earnest geek, the kind of guy who always remembers your anniversary but probably didn’t get picked first for kickball back in the day. Then, there’s Segel as the charismatic, blunt man’s man. He plays the kind of guy who would initiate a burping contest with his date, and tell her exactly how she looked in her dress, if she asked-honesty all the way, baby. The basic storyline is that Rudd’s character is getting married and doesn’t have any friends to be his groomsmen, let alone his best man, whereas his fiance has six bridesmaids lined up. So he sets out on a mission for some bromance, and has some pretty interesting, amusing Man-Dates along the way. Paul Rudd is hilarious and endearing in this role. He spouts off lame, random things when he is nervous, much to his own dismay, and he exudes that nice-guy charm which is guaranteed to appeal to the female demographic. He and Segel are very believable as friends, and their differing personalities mesh well together. Although women are probably more likely to go see this one, there is some humorous material here for the boys as well, so this would be an ideal date movie. I laughed many times and I just really enjoy these feel-good type of movies. If you do as well, then don’t miss this one!
