Dirty Dancing
October 6th, 2009
Expecting the usual tedium that accompanies a summer in the Catskills with her family, 17-year-old Frances “Baby” Houseman (Jennifer Grey) is surprised to find herself stepping into the shoes of a professional hoofer — and unexpectedly falling in love. The object of her affection? The resort’s free-spirited dance instructor (Patrick Swayze). This guilty pleasure became a classic when it won an Oscar for Best Song (“I’ve Had the Time of My Life”).
Engaging teen romantic drama. While vacationing with her family, “Baby” (Grey) meets and falls for Johnny (Swayze), an unconventional dance instructor. Although a fairly predictable as well as melodramatic plot, this story managed a pretty good mix of drama, humor, dancing and romance. The choreography was riveting and although not particularly “dirty” by today’s standards, the dancing definitely would have been during the era that was being portrayed. The chemistry between Swayze and Grey was particularly compelling. Great performances by all including a very talented supporting cast. Although this film has been around for almost 20 years, I watched this movie for the first time just the other day. With few expectations, I surprisingly found the music enjoyable, and the simple underlying message of the film seemed to still apply to teens even today. Definitely worth your time.
