Confessions of a Shopaholic
October 17th, 2009
With dreams of writing for a top fashion glossy, shopping addict Rebecca (Isla Fisher) begins working for a financial magazine pushed by the same publisher. But as her career skyrockets, she struggles to pay off overwhelming bills — and manage her love life. Joan Cusack, John Goodman and Krysten Ritter co-star in this glittery rom-com based on the best-selling series of Shopaholic books by Sophie Kinsella.
Superficial, silly fun, this movie is like a really decadent dessert that you indulge yourself with from time to time, a guilty pleasure if you will. The effervescent, delightful Isla Fisher is perfectly cast as Rebecca Bloomwood, and she is the highlight of this movie. Fisher’s character is a fashionista with heart of gold and pocketfull of platinum: 12, count em, 12 credit cards that enable her to make purchases on a whim, until she discovers that age-old lesson that money cant buy happiness, at least when monthly payments and credit limits are involved. Her character ironically lands a job at a serious financial magazine and writes articles that merge fashion with monetary advice. Subplots include an office romance, a very persistent debt collector with a Howard Coswell drone, and a newly engaged lovable best friend. The fashion is also fun, and I did laugh out loud several times at Fisher’s antics. The romantic part, however, felt forced. I would not really classify myself as a fan of the series, but I read the first book, and found it to be cute if a little vacuous. I felt similarly about this movie, but feel that I should say they do change quite a few things from the book, which is likely to alienate certain fans. I do feel that the spirit of the book, however, remains intact. Finally, the PG rating feels like a stretch, and I am not sure why they felt the need to market it toward such a young audience, should have been PG13, and there is some very mild language, so parents may want to pre-screen it. This is best recommended with only slight hesitation to fans of the series, as well as fellow shopaholics who can relate to the wacky extremes Bloomwood goes to for the sake of fashion. For those just looking for a good romantic comedy, this is passable but just dont expect to be blown away.
