The Exorcism of Emily Rose

September 28th, 2009

Attorney Erin Bruner (Laura Linney) always manages to keep her emotions in check when she’s in the middle of a case, but she finds herself unraveling when she decides to represent a priest (Tom Wilkinson) who’s conducted an exorcism gone horribly awry. The highly charged case, in which Erin battles an overconfident state lawyer (Aaron Douglas) who thinks he has a slam dunk, leaves her questioning her life choices, career prospects and beliefs.

It’s hard to come by a good horror movie. If you are looking for a very good, very scary movie – rent this film. Not only is it a creepy, scary movie, it’s also an engaging courtroom drama (which I love!). It poses a fascinating legal question in that the prosecutor is basing his case upon scienctific evidence (as is appropriate) and the defense is based upon religious beliefs. Although I am not a religious person, I certainly had to wonder how a devoutly religious person on the jury, particularly a Catholic, would consider the case. A very well-done film with excellent performances all around! Intellegent legal drama in a flat-out scary movie = 5 stars from me. (P.S. Although based upon a true story this is very much a dramitization of the facts. The film is loosely based upon the Klingenberg Case tried in the late 1970′s in Germany. A case not nearly as interesting as this fictional one – but then again I didn’t rent this for historic accuracy – I rented it because it’s supposed to be a horror film. To my delight, it was that and so much more.)
