House of 9

September 28th, 2009

Borrowing from Agatha Christie and the plots of Saw and Saw II, director Steven R. Monroe’s twisted tale takes nine unsuspecting victims (including Dennis Hopper, who portrays an Irish priest), traps them in a mansion and films their every move. Promising $5 million to the player who emerges victorious, their unseen captor uses them as pawns in a demented, live-action “game,” concocting horrible scenarios that force his captives to participate.

It’s hard not to compare this movie to Saw II. There are many similarities. House of 9 fails to build the suspense that Saw II had. The characters are at one another’s throats too quickly. There are no elaborate traps or tricks set up for them. We are to believe that in the situation they are in, they simply give up within minutes and make very little attempt to get themselves out. The movie is filled with over used sterotype characters…the Irish Catholic Priest, the angry black rapper with an uncontrolled temper and the strong, moralistic cop, to name a few. The only thing that saves this movie is that in the end, there is somewhat of a twist, but it’s not enough to make up for the rest of the movie which was slow and poorly written. I gave this movie one star more than I might have only because of the ending and the fact that, inspite of the bad dialogue and storyline, the acting isn’t half bad. The cast did the best they could with what they to work with.
